Traditionally the bark of the tree has been used as a tea for genito-urinary complaints. Today, pygeum is the favorite natural remedy for BPH in France and is also widely used in Italy and Germany. Pygeum contains phytosterols that interfere with the buildup of prostaglandins that accumulate in the prostate of men with BPH. The ferulic esters seem to influence testosterone activity in the prostate, reducing the risk of BPH.
By age 50, 50% of men have enlarged prostate glands. Prostate gland encircles male urethra, and enlargement in prostate gland blocks urinary passage, causing BPH symptoms including bedtime and frequent urination. BPH is caused by the formation of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Saw palmetto fruits have been demonstrated to inhibit DHT formation through the inhibitory effect on 5-alpha-reductase activity. It is also known to be beneficial for stopping hair loss and promoting hair growth.
Hydrangea Root mat dissolve gravel and is anti-inflammatory.
Horsetail is often combined with Hydrangea in the treatment of prostate troubles.
